Question intake question

obvisiously everyone had cold air kits on the site, its just how it is....anyone with a scoop hood on their tacoma check out the kit that Volant makes? seems pretty nice with the scoop actually being able to draw some air into the box. Or is the TRD one just the way to go.

your scoop is not real, it has a peice of plastic in front blocking air. if you wanted you could take it out, but that would let in a large amount of dust and water into your engine compartment. either way you decide on the intake mod. you probably shouldn't take the plastic peice off your scoop.

yeah but if you check out the volant kit, they make that piece that requires removal of that piece. i can see how it would cause issues, but why the hell sell it then? in theory it looks great, but prob a waste in the long run......

http://www.volant.com/pdetail.asp?ID=460

that is for the piece linking up to the hood piece......

http://www.volant.com/idetail.asp?ID=395

that is for the box itself....you can see on the front of the box where the pipe links up......confused though on to how it would stretch when the hood is opened??

Yes, kind of like the way intakes worked on some old muscle cars.

That doesn't look like it goes to the hood scoop. It looks like it goes to just above the radiator.

That's what I was thinking. I'll bet it would be easy to modify and run up to the scoop though....

The more I look at it... you are dead on.

The scoop, if modded for functionality, would drop air down onto the plastic intake cover which is much further back than the radiator.

Yup. Compare the following images from Volant and URD USA:

Something to consider.... Cold air intakes are great, but you have to realize that almost none of us drive on sweept/clean race tracks that have no dirt, cinders, snow, mud, trash on the roads. Living in Northern Arizona (even if someone made a kit like that for my truck), after a day of driving by the mountain lakes, from all the bugs it'd collect, I'd have a fracking granola bar looking thing in my intake.

Actually, where the hood scoop is , there is a "low pressure" area in the middle and to the rear on the hood. If the scoop was modded to let air in, it would actually let air out when moveing. For it to allow air in, it would have to be a few inches higher, or faceing backwards.
