Ok so I read the thread 4.56 vs 4.88s but ihave the auto 3.0 with 31s and the 4.56s and i just put my truck into 4 wheel parts and he said to go with 4.88s....... Can somebody help me out quick cuz the rear end is already torn apart? do i stick with 4.56s even if i decide to go to 32s? i am also only gettin 14.5 MPG around town, about 200 miles on a tank of gas. Is this good or bad? i am at work so if someone wants to text me or call me that would be appreciated! 303-249-8851

why do you need new gears?
if you get lower gears in the back, you gotta get lower ones up front. i'd say your mileage is bad because thats about what suburban gets. 22RE, 35s, 5.29s = 17mpg highway.

id stick with the 4.56 for now. i think thats a pretty good ratio for your engine's power and current tire selection.

Please DISREGARD ALL POSTS ABOVE AS THEY ARE FROM TACOMA OWNERS (not pre-Taco owners)
First, FACTORY with the auto and 31's was 4.88, and was undergeared IMHO due to the MONSTER overdrive (0.71). (NOTE: Manual tranny rigs had 4.56 when equipped with 31's). You need to check the door jamb sticker to see what ratio you have http://www.off-road.com/trucks4x4/ar....jsp?id=274535 because: Second, if your rig indeed came from the factory with 4.88 you are SCREWED as these diffs are not regearable due to an offset pinion. http://home.4x4wire.com/erik/diffs/ So, you have an auto and are running 32's currently ... you need 5.29 to be close to stock, and if you're thinking about 33's in the future, or want better power at the same or better gas mileage, you should really consider 5.71. If you actually 'wheel it, now would be the time to do lockers too ...

Note I said FACTORY 31's ... all rigs Toyota sent out of the FACTORY with 31's had 4.56 on a manual and 4.88 for automatic.
Unfortunately, a lot of dealers realized how much better the trucks looked with the 31's and took it upon themselves to install them without the other necessary change(s)

tc, I think you will find you're MT+31's=4.56 & AT+31's=4.88 claim to only be true in 93-95. I believe 90-92 went MT+31's=4.30 & AT+31's=4.56. Just something I've picked up on over the years. I've never seen a 4runner older than 93 w/ the 4.88's from the factory.

Because 31's were only available from the FACTORY from '93-'95

Ah, yes, I was following down the path the thread had taken, and not the OP.
Back to the point for the OP, the FACTORY thought 4.88's was the right gearing for the automatic/3.0 with 31's, and MANY MANY MANY people think they are overgeared for the monster overdrive, and recommend 5.29 for 31's for optimal highway performance, fuel economy, and transmission longevity.

And whats the chances the guy at 4wheel parts is gonna say "Oh yaeh we wont charge any extra for yanking out the 4.88s and putting in the 5.29s" "and go ahead and smack my a$$ and call me susan while your at it!!!" BTW they only did the rear for now since the fronts needed to be ordered! CRAP!
