Default Fan and Radiator Hoses

So I noticed today that the as soon as I crank up the 4runner, the engine fan comes on right away, even if its cold. This isn't normal is it? I don't know too terribly much about engines, but I don't recall any other vehicle being like this.

Also, I noticed that the upper radiator hose seems...empty? Temp gauge in the truck says its warmed up (halfway thru gauge). Where is the sensor for this at? Why is there no coolant in the upper hose?

Thanks for the help.

Is the A/C on when this happens?

Nope. Never use the A/C at all. I've gotta replace the radiator on it, so I'm going to replace the thermostat as well. Curious if that could be part of the cause?

It is normal for a fan clutch to be "locked" until the viscous fluid warms up. After running for a bit it should calm down.

If there is no coolant in the upper hose, fill your radiator. The upper hose is one of the highest points in your cooling system.

Why do you need a new radiator?

Radiator sprung a leak while on metberry gulch. Don't know how or when, but i think it was on the way out. Not a terrible leak, but I have no idea how old this rad is. So ill replace it with a newer one and solder this one for a spare. That and a new cv boot and ill be back in action.

Mine quits after about a minute from a cold start.
