There are always risks involved when taking a vehicle offroad. The following trail ratings are only a general guideline/rule of thumb. Off-road driving experience and skill level are not reflected in these guidelines. These guidelines are set up to help you decide if you want to go on a posted run and to ensure that everyone gets to wheel and enjoy the experience.

This does not mean you need to feel guilty if you experience a problem with your truck or the trail. If/when that happens everyone will happily help you get up and going again, we are all friends and have that camaraderie that comes with such a fun sport.

If you can not follow the guidelines or if you are not adequately set up for a trail you may be asked not to attend a run by the leader of the group. Arizona has a lot of trails in each of the ratings we have decided to define for our chapter of TTORA, other state chapters may have their own descriptions and therefore it is recommended that you familiarize yourself with these definitions for Arizona trail runs, especially if you are new here or from another state or chapter of TTORA.

If you would like to ride with anybody on a particular trail run, just ask - if anybody has an open seat, they will offer it to you. This is especially fun on the HardCore Trails riding with a Solid Axle Truck!

Current AzTTORA Trail Ratings:

Low tire pressure is recommended for every rating listed - plan on bringing deflators, a gage, and a way to refill your tires when the run's done. Good air pumps that will last (for stock size tires) cost about $60. Bringing a friend with on-board air is really handy

You are always expected to have a road worthly full size spare tire on board. We wheel with all makes of vehicles and there may not be a loaner in the group that would fit.

This is a four wheel drive club. Every run requires 4WD. Occasionally we will do a scenic trail that doesn't require 4WD. When that happens the post will say Pre-Runner Friendly Run, All Vehicles Welcome, or something to that effect.

1.0 (Ok, we don't need this)

2.0 Trail Rating (this is the access road to most Az trails - if you're coming to hike & watch someone wheel, this is what you need)
Unimproved dirt roads. Potholes, minor wash outs, medium sized rocks and mud holes. Higher ground clearance helpful. Street tires ok but off road tires recommended. Stock 4x4.

3.0 Trail Rating
Moderate Trail. Loose gravel, large pot holes, steep inclines, medium sized rocks. Ground clearance required. 30" off-road tires or larger required. Limited slip differential or better recommended.

3.5 Trail Rating
Difficult Trail. Loose gravel, large pot holes, steep inclines, medium sized rocks. 3-4' ledges or rock climbs; and off-camber situations. Body damage possible. 31" off-road tires or larger required. 32" or bigger recommended. Limited slip differential or better in rear required. Hard locker in rear differential recommended. A winch is recommended. Hi-Lift Jack; Sliders or other jack points; tow hooks; Skid plates & snatch straps recommended.

4.0 Trail Rating
Extreme Trail. Large rock ledges and crevices; large boulders, steep inclines and off camber situations. Some alternate routes available. Body and tire damage likely. Modified 4x4 vehicle required. Ground clearance required. 33" off-road tires or larger required. 35" off-road tires recommended. Hard locker in rear & a Limited Slip or better in front differential is required. Low gearing required. Winch recommended. Hi-Lift Jack; Sliders or other jack points; tow hooks; Skid plates & snatch straps recommended.

4.5 Trail Rating
Extreme Trail. 5-10' rock ledges and crevices; large boulders, steep inclines and off camber situations. Tight squeezes and possibility of rollovers. Few, if any, alternate routes. Depending on wheelbase, vehicles may have problems with break over angles, and all may have to use a winch or strap. Body and tire damage likely. Modified 4x4 vehicle required. High ground clearance required. 35" off-road tires or larger required. 37" Recommended. Hard locker in front & rear differential required. Low gearing required. Winch required. Up graded axles required. Spare parts recommended: axles; U-joints; hubs; driveshafts. Hi-Lift Jack; Sliders or other jack points; tow hooks; Skid plates & snatch straps recommended.

5.0 Trail Rating
Extreme Technical Trail. 5-15' rock ledges and crevices; large boulders, steep inclines and off camber situations. Tight squeezes and possibility of rollovers. Few, if any, alternate routes. Depending on wheelbase, vehicles may have problems with break over angles, and all may have to use a winch or strap. Body and tire damage likely. Trail may be impassible and realistically should be run with a fully modified rock buggy. Highly modified 4x4 vehicle required. Extreme ground clearance required. 37" off-road tires or larger required. 40" tires recommended. Hard locker in front & rear differential required. Winch required. Up graded axles required. Spare parts recommended: axles; U-joints; hubs; driveshafts. Hi-Lift Jack; Sliders or other jack points; tow hooks; Skid plates & snatch straps recommended.
