Default project old school

well i started working on my truck again , i think the first time since my quad accident back in october.
I thought i may as well start a buildup thread. at first i got the truck to fix and make a daily driver. now i dont know what im doing with it but its getting built up. my plan is for a budget beater as i am also trying to keep my 05 together and that takes up most the coin.

i guess ill start from the beginning

started with a basic tube front end and an ivan dan kit. that was a bitch

and then it passed smog no problems.

Default the cage

started with a cage and tied it into the front cage tubes. used poly body mounts and use polymounts to mount cage to frame. still needs door bars and gusseting to body

Default bedcage

ditched the bed and got some used hanneman bedsides for a good deal , for an 89^ truck but i liked it better than other versions out there for a 88. started a simple bedcage and gonna mount the foas i got soon.painted the cage cuz who knows when ill get to it again. i also have to get a cell ,exhaust and cut the oem cross tube out its gonna get in the way of the shocks

cant stand the 2tone cab

Default next up

next step is some door bars and closing up the cab with sheetmetal as well as do some rust repair around the windshield frame(only real rust on truck). some deavers in the rear and finish design on my front suspension. i got all the heims , uniballs , spacers, d35 axle stubs, bms backing plate, foa coilovers and bumps , ect needed to build the front suspension. have some prelim drawings not the best pics but im going the distance, just lack the funds for a 4'x10' sheet of 3/16 chromoly at the moment plus sme other misc odd and ends

limited to approx. 18.5 inches with 10"shocks ,can squeeze 21" out of it with a longer shock but its not needed. arms are 3"over per side and a non oem mounting location for the uppers. i cant recall how many hours i have in drawings , changing things untill the numbers are where i want them . im in the middle of working out castor curves and then all thats left is bump steer but ill work that out on the truck before the spindles are finished

boy do i need solidworks or inventor

your truck looks great! I have built a few LT front ends and you are definitly on the right track with the drawings. ps - people that are realy good with solid works, but dont understand suspension geometry, cant do it any faster than YOU with a pencil and paper.

thanks guys.

i cant stand whitewall on tires i know it would make it look more oldskool for the build but those are just street tires anyhow, maybe some 33" bfg allterrains with the whitewalls out when its all completed but not these.

right now im thinking of getting a jaz fuel cell to put in the back so i can finish the rear end untill i get some deavers and or a sheet of chromoly. this thing needs a suspension so i can go out and kill the motor to make way for a gt28rs and low comp lower end

You should get some BFG A/Ts and put Port-O-Walls on them. That would trip people right the fuck out! White Wall BFGs on a caged LT truck?! My mind is officially blown!

How bout this fuel cell? Its says Jegs but I think its an RCI fuel cell, does anyone have experience with these? looks like a Jazz but almost half the price at $219

idk,im going with jaz because ive seen a lot of them on desert trucks and havent heard any problems.this is the one im looking at but its 22gal .also a big thread on race desert about them .

http://store.summitracing.com/partde...5&autoview=sku

now that i look at it the jegs one is not a bad deal especially for a 32 gal cell.
the jegs one dosent have foam(but can be added, and can get pricey for a 32 gal cell) and its spot welded instead of seam welded like the jaz( could only be a problem if the liner has a leak).
other than that the filler cap is integral to the fittings and dosent have an option to mount a 45* neck at any clocking position which is only a concern where the tank filler on top of the tank is a hard to reach place.
im lookin at it now because it would fit in the back a little better than the one im looking at

i gotta pay some attention to my 05 , i got my springs back from deaver, gotta make new shackles, new bump strikers, limit straps and revalve, also noticed that the 3rd member seal is leaking and my u-joint to flange adaptor is showing signs of fatigue .so thats a day of work right there to pull the 3rd inspect and reseal , not enough time in the day as usual. on top of that my 1/4" alum skids are done getting bent up so i have to finish installing those also

i was thinking about selling my 88 and just concentrate on my tacoma but im shure ill get more for it if its done , when ever that may be .

Hey mpower

What bender are you using? I've been looking at the model 3. Just curious what you're using.

i have the model 4 with the hyd foot pump . i like it but wish i would have spent the more money and gotten an enco, so i can do multiple plane bends almost right where the other bend left off , can do a 90* + bend in one shot and dosent have my air comp running with every cylinder stroke

the model 4 is pretty accurate and can do 180* bend in about 4 strokes, takes 2 strokes to do a 90* bend.

the model 3 would probably be fine if you got the room to bolt it to the floor in a nice open space and dont plan on using it for more that personal projects. i got the model 4 so it can be rolled where ever and used without securing it to the floor somewhere and i can bend those 2" tubes without breaking a sweat.

Default a little progress

got a little more done on the the truck. decided that i dont need a/c and heating system so i took everything out. the metal around the windshield was rotting out so i purchased a much better roof from calmini and welded that bitch on. finished up with the gusseting on the upper section of the cage and decided to paint while the roof was off. next is finishing doors bars, adding structure to the cage at front engine cage, closing up the sheetmetal , and tieing the cage into the cab . its a shit load more work but itl be worth it. still debating weather or not to keep the front windshield.

anybody wanna trade some fiberglass/body work + primer , for some fab work ?? damn thing is multi colored now, but i do got the white fender thing going on , shit i know i got a kartek sticker around somewhere too

start

middle

end

Sweet man, looks hell-fer-stout. Can't wait to see it running. You should fix the flag on the shop though.

thanks logan , flag was fixed that night but u talking about a photoshop fix?

just need a some damn suspension now . i got all the shocks and parts minus metal still to make the arms, just been a bit hesitant on dropping some cash on another 4-500$ of metal at the moment.playing with just finding a used tc-uniball kit just to get it running in the dirt

got shocks for the rear and it can cycle 14-15" no prob in stock leaf arrangement, so im not too concerned with getting the rear done untill the front is done .

been thinking of romping it with the stock suspension for a run since its all in one piece running perfect to see how it does.still needs alot though before its even halfway done

You should rock it stock for a while and just get a tc kit later. Custom is sweet, but no need to reinvent the wheel if you can find a used kit cheap.
