So every one knows that if you go to 33" tires you go with 4:88 gears and 5:29s with 35s.
But what I want to know is who are the good manufacturers of these ring and pinions? |

mmmm depends on the motor and transmission for your conversion, i have heard/seen of 4.88 for 35's with a 3.4 and auto.... its more by preference, i know that nate runs 5.29's with a true 35 and he loves it. i have also seen and driven 4.88's with 35's and it was a huge improvement over stock.
Yukon and ECGS are the 2 that come to mind |

Good point, I keep forgetting the details to better assist those who are trying to help me.
So my '88 has a 3.slow with a 5spd and I'll probably run 35s. |

ECGS doesnt make gears.
Persicion is the new hot one to get. Yukons are good as well. The setup is the important part. I would talk to whoever you are gonna have set up your diffs and get the brand that they get the best patterns with.

My yukons are awesome! I love them. Mythica turned me on to them. They are so quiet!

I got precision from ECGS and had thefatkid set them up. works great so far. beat on em in moab for a week and they did fine. quiet. pulled the diff after a few heat cycles and the pattern looked great (mostly due to setup).

Lies! I like Precision the best, they have the best inital setup pattern. Yukon (not the value line) is on par with Richmond. The yukon value line and genuine can get a decent pattern, though not consistent from tooth to tooth. I've set up one set of Trail Gear gears, they set up ok, I was not told if they had any abnormal nosie (should not have but you never know). I'd say they were yukon value line quality. Anyone else making/rebadging gears out there?

Nitro gears (rumored to be made by Precision) are also good quality.

That is right, Nitro. I installed them when I was working at Slee. They were a nice high quality gearset.

TG is Yukon. Same exact gear as a Nitro Gear. The new G2 gears from 4WP is also the same. They are quality gears. Every one I have setup (likely around 100 sets has been very good patterns.

I remember from back in the day at Slee (almost 5 years now) Nitro had the same markings as Precision. I have not set up a set of Nitro gears in a long time. Normally Slee used Precision untill there was a shortage, I installed a couple of Nitro sets then went back to Precision.
The trail gear set I have right now doesn't match the Yukon sets I have done. The finish on the pinion is different. I'm not sure if they match the value line though. Wasn't there a US gear brand also? They had some sort of crest stamp on the ring. I wouldn't be suprised if they all come of the same machine now. Quality control determines who gets what gears and how much they cost. Final finishing could also explain different gear manufactures.

ECGS is only sending out Nitro. The other options are gone. Did they do this as a cost cutting measure?

More than likely. I dont think they are making gears branded precision anymore though also.

Still leftovers. When I regeared the rears were still fairly easy to find, but the fronts were fairly rare.

So I'm thinking about getting in on this group buy for some Nitro ring and pinions:
http://ttora.com/forum/showthread.ph...15#post2121815 And I've been quoted $669 for 5.29 front and rear with shipping. What I want to know is this price a good price or is it out of line and are the Nitros worth the cost. I did some of my own research and found a place that sells Precision Gears and they go for $160 less than what I've been quoted on this group buy. |

Caution on places that still list Precision gears. I just ordered mine a few weeks ago, ECGS called to tell me they didn't really have any, and that they weren't aware they were still listed as available on their website. They sent me Nitro's for the same cost in replacement.
Just Differentials listed and shipped precision's I paid: $190 for a 5.29 e-locker $225 for 5.29 8.4 that's just gears, not master install kits, which are just as expensive as the gears (or more) FWIW, when ECGS called me, they mentioned that the percision gears changed towards the end and weren't very high quality. Now, they couln't be more vague about when this happened, what specifically changed or what specifically didn't meet their standards. About the only portion of this that holds any weight is that it was somebody from a (dedicated) gear supplier.

No, I didn't return anything. ECGS saw that I ordered precision and sent me nitro's instead (for the same price).

Gear setup is more important than anything for gear life.

But is $669 a decent price for the gears, master install kits, solid spacers?
Never bought gears before, so give a noob a hand. ![]() Check that, I decidied to pass on the group buy and keep putting $ towards the SAS/Lift. Last edited by Yanman; 02-25-2011 at 06:29 AM. |

yes, that's a deal if it comes with the master install kits...
What I just paid for the Master install kit: elocker: $220 8.4: $231 I did not go with the solid spacer, but I think they are another $20 each And damn you for making me think and re-think about what I would have saved if I'd waited another 3 weeks.

Are the diffs already built? I'd highly suggest running solid spacers in Toyota diffs.
