Default disaster preparedness pop quiz

Today, we had a nice little thunder storm.

Hail, lights out, lightning, the works.

No big deal.

I like to use these little situations like a disaster preparedness pop quizz.

I fired up the generator and went around checking things out.

Food? passed- I have a box full of enough stuff to hold me off for a week.

Yuk- but I will survive.

Water? Passed. 16 gallons stashed.

Gas? Failed. None on hand.

I went down and put 10 gallons in my storage drum.

I had emptied all my stash at the end of last year's hurricane season to avoid having a stash of bad gas.

I'm going to treat the gas as I put it into my 55gal drum so it won't go bad and I will have it for the generator or the trucks if we decide to leave.

What about you guys?

Hurricane season is just around the corner, are you ready? The weather guys claim that this summer will probably produce another record setting hurricane season.

I have a camping stove, large pots, extra gas cylinders, 10 gallons of water, 25 pounds of rice, 25 pounds of pinto beans, 10 lbs sugar, a lot of spices, canned corn, canned tomato sauce, canned tomatos, canned tuna, canned salmon... List goes on. I have enough food in my apartment to feed myself chili for 50 days. It would not smell too good in my apartment, but at least I will be eating.

Yeah, my camping gear and my emergency gear overlap quite a bit, too.

I also include my big gas BBQ pit, and I'm glad you mentioned bottles of gas because I don't think the extra bottle for the pit is full.

Gonna have to check that out.

Mitch- living in an apartment is not a death sentence! you can still stash a few things for when (Not if!) the shit gets hairy!

Oh yeah...

I forgot buckshot!

Gotta have an ample suply of double ought on hand!

I've had my 12 guage out to play a few times lately and my stash of buckshot is getting skinny.

How the hell am I going to train the looters without a bunch of buckshot?

I guess I need to start a shopping list.

I just go to work. Emergency Well water (or city if it's up), 8 (1.5,egawatts each) Cummins GenSets, Enough gas to run for a few weeks on current load. All the cooking tools (thanks to our new kitchen remodel) and a surplus of food to feed the staff for a week, and not bagged food from survival kits. Good thing work is only 4 miles away now. I think im good.

But besides from that, I have a 7 day 3 person survival kit waiting in the closet. Always bring it with me in the truck when I go camping and such... habbit started by my father which always stored it in the work truck. We used to drive all over California to check out Microwave tower sites.

Why prepare for a disaster? Isnt that FEMA's job? To care of us that are to lazy to prepare for ourselves?

I've got
55 gal. barrel of water
10 gal. of bleach, and a water test kit
3 cases of MRE's
25 gal. of fuel (not counting 40 gal. in the boat)
25lb bag of rice
25lb bag of beans
10lb of coffee
5lb of Bug Juice mix
3 propane lanterns w/5 spare cylinders
2 dozen candles
Generator
2 5gal tanks of propane
Propane stove
Propane turkey fryer
3 stocked med kits (1 in each veh.)
Camping gear
And plenty of ammo for the guns

I got in the habit of keeping lots of consumables and necessary survival items stashed away when I was stationed overseas.

I see it like this...

If it got all the way down to New Orleans scale ugly, I might have to shoot a few motherfuckers. let's say ten for the sake of conversation.

Now, I don't think ANYBODY would go into combat knowing he would have to pop ten mofos- and only take ten bullets.

Nope...

I'm saying that ten mofos deserves a hundred rounds.

But wait-

What if I've underestimated things?

Shit, bullets are cheap! a thousand rounds it is!

I don't have an actual count, but my stash of 12GA, .223, .45acp, .357mag, .30-30, and .22 cal in assorted lengths is probably going to pass the thousand round test.

But if I have my choice (And as the sole possessor of the combination to the safe, I do) I'm gonna choose the 12GA for the chore of being the looter shooter. it just seems like the best first choice.

I'm gonna buy some buckshot today. Right now I have about 35 rounds of buckshot in the safe.

Well, with the .17 cal you can feed yourself by hunting the thousands of squirrells that live in the city. If I hit a squirrel with my .30-06 there will be nothing but a blood spot left.

If it hits the fan big time you will want ONE firearm to carry around. (possibly a handgun also...) so in your case the shotgun is the best urban weapon that you have. More than one weapon/ammo will just be a PITA to deal with if you are getting shot at/shooting at somebody.

I only have one firearm, so my choice has already been made.

Agreed.

My lever action .22 will shoot short, long, and long rifle. .22 short is about as loud as a pellet gun and won't attract a lot of attention. It will serve nicely in that role.

Guns and Ammo? Yep all hand guns from 0.22 to 0.45's
Food? Sort of (rice, can foods, energy bars)
Fire? Sort of, my propane tanks are running low, need to refill and store one. Plus, i have a greenbelt that I can cut some trees down!
Water? Sort of - No supply, but I do have a hand held water purifier that I use for camping.
Cooking element? Yep, the one I use for camping.
Cooking fuel? Yep.
Clothes? Yep, I have a backpack ready for emergencies.
Shelter? Yep, my old tent of 15 years and my new tent of 5 years.
Injury Supplies? Yep, both for home and three vehicals.
Money? No comment.
Electric generator - NOPE.
Gas? Nope - need a 55 gallon reserve tank - I do have the gas stablizer.

Frank, nice safe, I have yet purchased a long gun. Some day soon.
Quick question, what's the make and model and is it water/fire resistant?

Shit Frank, thats what I call gettin ready. One more really important thing to have after a hurricane a damn good chainsaw or two with plenty of chains to go with it. I was without this and had to go through ditches and peoples yards after the hurricane hit around here. It sure was fun since noone was around doing some urban wheeling like that but it sucked cause it was hot as hell and no damn women around, and not taking a shower(4-5 days) after wading through flood water sucked balls

I've had my gunsafe for about ten or twelve years. I don't know the model number, but it's an eight gun safe. There is also lots of shelf space for several hand guns and lots of ammo.

It was made by American Security Products.

It's not fire or waterproof.

When the bad guys broke into my house in the mid-90s, they found that safe in the upstairs bedroom closet.

They didn't even bother trying to beat on it, they just gave up and went back to stealing computers and TVs.

Good enough for me!

I don't know where to get a deal.

I bought mine on a "Nothing down, no interest, 12 months to pay" special that Carter's Country used to do along with Beneficial Finance here in Houston.

It was a one time a year thing.

I suspect that punching "Gunsafe" into Google will probably get you more info than you can read in a day.

I bet if you narrow it down by adding the name of the nearest large city to you will get you the name of some dealers.

The place where I got mine is the largest gun store in Houston.

I've also noticed that Academy has some. you might want to check that out.

Whatever you do, get one. A real safe with a real lock.

Losing your guns and the money you invested in them is one thing, but arming the bad guys is not acceptable!

My dad built one in his garage using cinder blocks that are filled with concrete and 1" rebar down the middle, same for the roof. The door is 3/8" steel with over welded hinges and 6" x 3/4" pipe welded around the two locks using two different keys. Not water or fire proof, but I would use it for a storm shelter if it was bigger. Its big enough to hold 20 or so long arms and a shelf, with a light built in, for numerous hand cannons and ammo. Truly a sweet design and totally functional. A looter wouldn't have a chance in hell to get in there. O he also keeps the cutting torch in there for his bottles just as insurance. One of these days I will build my own.

Since we are on the subject of guns...

I am a .30 cal guy. The smaller calibers just dont do it for me...

I am also a bolt action guy... but I do like the a good and reliable semi-auto. so I have been looking at .30-06 semi autos... And am realizing other than the Garand, and the modern BAR there are not may choices on the market.

So my question to y'all (fastfrank etc...) is... Does the .308 cut it in knock down power vs the .30-06. I ask because there are many magazine fed .308 weapons (thinking of the H&K) available...

Regardless, I am in the market for a Garand...

Thought ChrisK had a garand that could leave his place for the right price.

You may like this site to do the thinking for ya. It's comparing the Remington 30-06 vs the 308 both soft tip and 125grs. You can just goto the remington ammunition calc and compare all sorts of ammo. Heres the link to a comparison chart.

Ballistic Comparisson

It seems that the 30-06 (first on the list in that comparision) has more energy and more speed And if I read this right... doesnt drop as fast either.
