Take the intake off and just run an open pipe.

If you do that, your engine will get burned as badly as you are about to by all the people telling you to search.

The Deckplate and Elbow is the little button between "New Posts" and "quick links". Now, don't be fooled, it may say "search" on it, but it's really the answer to your questions... Just Type in the magic words "deckplate" or "elbow" and all will be right.

I done the Deckplate Mod to my 96 Tacoma and it helped offset the fact that I put 35's on it with stock running gear. And, it's free. Instead of actually purchasing a deckplate and putting that on my airbox, I used a Dodge Ram Bedliner Hole Insert (happened to be the exact same size as the hole I cut, and had a convinient finger tab for removal). IMO, definantly worth it, especially if you have the K&N or TRD replacement airfilter.

IMO, there isn't a difference performance wise in the K&N and the TRD, both being high flow, oil saturated filters. Now, the BIG difference--- The TRD filter is a TOYOTA part, meaning there is NO way a dealer can refuse you warranty work because of changing the filter (I work at a dealership that will fight warranty work if a K&N filter is used, saying that it is the filter that causes problems. BTW, total bullshit in most cases). Now, finding a K&N is as easy as looking in the phone book for a parts store (as I tell this to a guy that I had to show the "search" button to), and the TRD Filter is availble either online OR at a Toyota Dealership that is TRD Certified (not all dealerships carry TRD performance parts, btw). So, there u go....

So what you're really saying is that the Trueflow is only slightly better than a swift kick in the nuts?!?! Too funny...lol

I just put an Amsoil EA Nanofiber filter in my Truck about an hour ago. The fitment was perfect. That being said.... No matter what filter element you go with, you're not going to feel a noticeable difference in power on a normally aspirated vehicle(Except for maybe on a big V8 vehicle with a really restrictive stock intake).... but you may see another MPG or 2 gain in fuel economy.

The Amsoil drop-in filter, coupled with a straight(non-resonated) intake pipe did wonders on my G35 Coupe when I put it on there a year and a half ago(+2 MPG across the board)... so if it does even half of that for my truck, I'll be a happy camper.

Don't get a fuckin K&N filter, whatever you do. You would not believe how much dirt gets sucked through those filters, plus they are oiled and run the risk of screwing up your MAF sensor. That was the first air filter that I had in my G35 and my oil got noticeably dirtier when I started using that filter. After switching that out to an the Amsoil filter, the oil got cleaner again after 2 oil changes and has stayed that way ever since. I also saw a lot of light dust on the other(clean) side of my intake pipe after removing my K&N filter.... I've yet to see that since putting in the EA Nanofiber filter.

I agree on the Amsoil filter. I just mentioned the K&N and TRD because the're common and didn't wanna confuse the guy. But as far as Amsoil products, you CAN'T go wrong with them! I've used Amsoil products in several vehicles and IMO there's no comparison...

I had the K&N and it leaked around the seal. I then swapped out to the TRD filter and have no leaks.

I am happy with the TRD but would like to try the AMSoil Nonofiber filter if they ever make one for the 97.

Check out this thread a few months ago. I did a write up on the matrix and the Tacoma.

truflow will be great. the deckplate you should call beckson themselves or go to their website and you can get off color ones for only 4 bucks vs. 12. every little bit helps.

the best intake out is the True Flow xdi intake. go to trueflow.com and watch their introductory video they have. after you watch that you won't want to buy a downey intake, k&n intake, volant intake or any intake that uses a fiber filter.

All right, burn me, first time post! I have searched the site, used the SEARCH button and found varied opinions.

I have an 03 v6 3.4 and have the factory air intake box with a k and n filter. (I like the filter, had one in my 95 4runner). I am building this truck for Mississippi mud and was wondering about any advice, experiences, opinions on doing a snorkel versus a deckplate mod. I know the stupid open cone systems from K&N will just get soaked as soon as I hit the first mud hole so how do I keep the filter dry (ie a boxed system) while alleviating my Toy gasping for air?!
Yes the deckplate can be put back on for wheeling and taken off for street riding, but would a snorkel not be better as an investement if I know the truck is going to swim alot?

Thanks for any advice and sorry if i piss of any moderators. I've searched on my own, but found no answers on what set up is better for water/mud.

with a snorkel I believe that you will be replacing/cleaning your filter more often. To get rid of this, some people have turned the intake at the end facing backwards. It seems to help with the problem.

Another thing that I just thought about would be if you are hitting water fast or slinging alot of mud, having it face forward would maybe get water and mud in there. Turning it backwards would also solve that problem.

I have had the deckplate for a while. I think it helps me on the interstate when I floor it, but it hurts my gas mileage. I normally get 11.5-12 with it open and with it closed I get 12-13.5

yeah i would definitely turn it sideways or backwards to cut down on bugs and mud, plus regularly checking the box for junk that got in.

So if you get better mileage with the deckplate closed then why even install one?
what do you think about factory boxes versus the open systems that leave the filter totally exposed?

thanks so much...nice truck mine is silver too!
